Effect of Post-Weaning Individual Housing on Autonomic Responses in Male Rats to Sexually Receptive Female Rats

چکیده
Post-weaning individual housing induces significant alterations in the reward system of adult male rats presented with sexually receptive female rats. In this study, we examined the effects of post-weaning individual housing on autonomic nervous activity in adult male rats during encounters with sexually receptive female rats to assess whether different affective states depending on post-weaning housing conditions are produced. Changes in heart rate and spectral parameters of heart rate variability indicated that in post-weaning individually housed male rats, both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity increased with no change in the sympathovagal balance, while in post-weaning socially housed male rats, both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity decreased with a predominance of parasympathetic activity. These two patterns of shifts in sympathovagal balances closely resembled changes in autonomic nervous activity with regard to classical appetitive conditioning in male rats. The autonomic changes in male rats housed individually after weaning corresponded to changes associated with the reward-expecting state evoked by the conditioned stimulus, and the autonomic changes observed in male rats housed socially after weaning corresponded to changes associated with the reward-receiving state evoked by the unconditioned stimulus. These results suggest that different affective states were induced in adult male rats during sexual encounters depending on male-male social interactions after weaning. The remarkable change caused by post-weaning individual housing may be ascribed to alteration of the reward system during sexual encounters induced by deficiency of intermale social communication after weaning.

Effects of an isolated or enriched environment after handling on sexual maturation and behaviour in male and female rats.
Male and female rats that were handled from birth to 30 days had increased adrenal weight at weaning. The animals were then rehoused in (a) groups of 10 in a large cage with an enriched environment, (b) a small cage in pairs, or (c) a small cage alone. Isolation advanced and enrichment retarded vaginal opening (in comparison with paired animals) in handled and unhandled females. Puberty was acc...
متن کاملEffect of prenatal immobilization stress on sexual activity in male Wistar rats
Since the stress influences the biological processes, in the present study the effect of prenatal immobilization stress on the sexual activity of male rats was studied. Adult male and female Wistar rats (Pasteur Institute, Tehran) were copulated. After observing the vaginal plugs, pregnant rats were divided into control and two experimental groups. All groups were kept under the laboratory co...
متن کاملEffects of Camphor on Sexual Behaviors in Male Rats
According to Iran’s folk medicine, camphor, a crystalline ketone obtained from essential oils of Cinnamomum camphora, has both sexual behavior attenuating and enhancing properties. This study examined the effects of camphor on sexual behavior in male rats. Twenty four sexually mature male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups receiving daily i.p. injections of oliv...
متن کاملInfluence of housing conditions from weaning to adulthood on the ventilatory, thermoregulatory, and endocrine responses to hypoxia of adult female rats.
Housing conditions affect animal physiology. We previously showed that the hypoxic ventilatory and thermoregulatory responses to hypoxia of adult male rats housed in triads during the juvenile period (postnatal day 21 to adulthood) were significantly reduced compared with animals housed in pairs. Because sex hormones influence development and responsiveness to environmental stressors, this stud...

Introduction: We investigated the sexually dimorphic effects of Dextromethorphan (DM) on cognitive and depression-like behaviors as well as on hippocampal histology in rats following acute administration. Methods: Wistar rats of both sexes were treated with 25 or 50 mg/kg of DM for 7 days via intraperitoneal injection. At the end of the administration, behavioral studies were performed on the ...
